YEARS LATER: Two Years of “Invasion of Privacy”

As of April 6th, in the year of 2020, “Invasion of Privacy” is here to celebrate it’s two year anniversary of it’s original release since, April 6, 2019. “Invasion of Privacy” is the debut studio album by American rapper Cardi B. It was released on April 6, 2018, by Atlantic Records. Primarily a hip hop album, Invasion of Privacy also comprises other genres such as trap, Latin and R&B.

The album debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200, earning 255,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, with 103,000 coming from pure album sales. It has since been able to spend 100 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts and was the first debut female rap album to spend 100 Weeks on the Billboard 200.

It has also been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) but it has since been eligible to be 4X Platinum. The album produced five singles—”Bodak Yellow”, “Bartier Cardi” featuring 21 Savage, “Be Careful”, “I Like It” with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, and “Ring” featuring Kehlani.

“Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It” have both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female rapper to achieve multiple chart-toppers. The album set multiple streaming records, while all the thirteen tracks entered the Hot 100—all except the lead single charted simultaneously in the debut week. She became the first female artist to have all tracks from an album certified gold or higher by the RIAA. It was the top female rap album of the 2010s, according to the Billboard 200 decade-end chart.

It became the longest-charting debut album by a female rapper on the Billboard 200, and the most-streamed album by a female rapper on Spotify.

The album was made available for streaming and digital download on April 5, 2018, but was not available on any physical format upon its initial release. The album was eventually released on vinyl on December 7, 2018, and its CD release – initially scheduled for September 28, 2018 – was released on February 22, 2019.

BACKGROUND

Invasion of Privacy was recorded from 2017 until early 2018. It features production from 30 Roc, Allen Ritter, Andrew Watt, Ayo, Benny Blanco, Boi-1da, Cassius Jay, Cheeze Beatz, Craig Kallman, Cubeatz, DJ Mustard, DJ Official, DJ SwanQo, Frank Dukes, Invincible, J. White, Keyz, Klenard Raphael, Murda Beatz, Matt Allen, Needlz, NES, Nonstop Da Hitman, Scribz Riley, Tainy and Vinylz, among others.

SONGS

While “Invasion of Privacy” is primarily a hip hop album, Invasion of Privacy it comprises other music elements such as trap, Latin music and R&B, while its lyrical themes include fame, success, wealth, sex, and feminism, as well as Cardi B’s past. Here is the best descriptions of the album following from the beginning to end:

GET UP 10

The album opens with “Get Up 10”, which speaks about Cardi B’s rise to fame. It is followed by a trap song “Drip”, which features a guest appearance by Migos, and speaks about jewelry, wealth, and Cardi B and Migos’ status of fame. The third track “Bickenhead” has a feminist theme; its title and song refers to women who work hard for money.

BODAK YELLOW

A hip hop and trap song the most known song from the album, being “Bodak Yellow” follows, on which Cardi B confronts her enemies and makes statements such as: “I don’t dance now, I make money moves”, referring to her past, on how she used to be a stripper before rising to fame from Instagram and Love & Hip-Hop.

BE CAREFUL

Onto the fourth track “Be Careful”, which just celebrated it’s own second birthday last month, on March 29th, Cardi B performs the hook using a very softly sung vocal style over a “laidback” beat, which is almost unusual coming from a brash Cardi. Lyrically, “Be Careful” is a song about a mans infidelity, where the protagonist warns her cheating partner and asks him to treat her better. During an interview, Cardi B stated that she drew inspiration from past relationships, while denying that the song was directed at her then fiancé, now husband Offset.

“BEST LIFE”

The sixth track “Best Life” features a guest appearance by Chance the Rapper; the lyrics discuss the power of God and positive thinking. Personally, I still say that this was more of Chance the Rapper song, but Chance ended up giving it to Cardi.

“I LIKE IT”

It’s followed by “I Like It”, a bilingual (English and Spanish) latin trap song featuring singers Bad Bunny and J Balvin. The song is very fun and has a vibe for the spring and summer times. When this song got so big you just knew that Cardi had another hit on her hands.

“RING & THRU YOUR PHONE”

Invasion of Privacy also contains two R&B mid-tempo songs–”Ring” (featuring Kehlani) and “Thru Your Phone”–which both lyrically show Cardi B’s emotional vulnerability.

“Ring” is followed by three hip hop and trap songs: “Money Bag”,”Bartier Cardi” (featuring 21 Savage), and “She Bad” (with YG). “Bartier Cardi is another song that celebrated the two year release of the music video which is just as flashy as the song. On “Bartier Cardi”, Cardi B raps about her wealth from her attraction to diamonds, sports cars and being able to have sex, while 21 Savage raps about a similar theme from the usual male perspective.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

“Invasion of Privacy” was met with much critical acclaim, produced many well known hits that many people that not just from the females, but the males can also even enjoy. “Invasion of Privacy” has won Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, with Cardi B becoming the first female rapper to win the category as a solo artist.

It was also nominated for Album of the Year, with “I Like It” being nominated for Record of the Year and “Be Careful” for Best Rap Performance. It became the first female rap album in fifteen years to be nominated for Album of the Year. “Bodak Yellow” was nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for the previous ceremony. At the 2019 BET Awards, Invasion of Privacy won the BET Award for Album of the Year

INFLUENCE ON FEMALE HIP-HOP

After the amazing and critical acclaim of “Invasion of Privacy” the female rap game has been flourishing since Cardi has stepped onto the scene. There has been a numerous female rappers that has since made their debuts and kick starting their own careers. Some girls being the City Girls, Megan thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Lizzo, Rico Nastyy, and many more have all released some type of projects since “Invasion of Privacy” has been released. While some of them haven’t recieved the complete critical acclaim like “Invasion of Privacy,” its still so great to see so many album projects from so many female rappers. Albums or LP’s like “Stacked,” from Kash Doll and “Suga” by Megan thee Stallion has definitely taken some ques from “Invasion of Privacy.”

It can be argued that there has been at least two more albums that has been successful since IOP, and I would say that would be Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You” (2017) and Doja Cat’s “Hot Pink” albums.

For Lizzo its not complete Hip-Hop but its still kind of fits within that bracket and still contains elements of Hip-Hop. While Doja’s album is even more confusing as Billboard even dubs it as more of an R&B album, it still can be justified under Hip-Hop. Lizzo’s album “Cuz I Love You” was also able to get a Grammy from 2019, under the category of, ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album.’ Doja Cat’s “Hot Pink album has yet to receive any awards but with how well it did with critics, there is no doubt it will be seeing some awards once the award season for music starts up again. Well, that is if Coronavirus has anything to say on it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Cardi’s “Invasion of Privacy” as a BardiGang fan made me so proud to see where she has come from since the release of this album! Her stardom may have been a very slow start, but I knew one day she would eventually become a star. Seeing her from becoming a stripper, to a IG model/spokesperson, to a Love & Hip-Hop cast member to now being one of the big names in music. It’s just been amazing to see how much her career has grown. “Invasion of Privacy” as an album is something I still listen to every other day, and have not stopped listening to one song since it was released in 2018. An album like this, is where you still remember where you were when it released and you can still name off some of your favorite songs, even when it’s been a couple of years since it’s been released.

The replay value of “Invasion of Privacy is undeniable and it is still getting spins as of 2020. As of this point, we can not wait to see what Cardi’s next big music project is going to be. It’s been months since she’s even dropped anything, and we are sure that we will not be disappointed!

What do you still think of “Invasion of Privacy,” after two years later? Do you still listen to it, and what are still some of your favorite songs from the album? Please let me know in the comments!

YEARS LATER: Cardi B Released “Drip” Featuring the Migos Two Years Ago

Two years ago today, Cardi released “Drip” as a promotional single for her debut album. It was written by Cardi B, Quavo, Takeoff, Offset and Joshua Cross, with production handled by Cassius Jay and Nonstop Da Hitman.

BACKGROUND

The song was made available for digital download alongside the reveal of the album’s full track listing. The song’s beat was originally used for an unreleased Young Thug and Future song titled “Upscale” which also featured Quavo.

FINAL THOUGHTS

“Drip” received mixed reviews from music critics. Lyrically, the artists hit back at critics who have attacked them.

Aside from Cardi’s part in the song, it’s really of the few songs from “Invasion of Privacy,” that I really could’ve lived without. As much as I respect the Migos and Offset, (who was Cardi’s fiance) during that time, I just wasn’t feeling this song, and couldn’t really get into it.

While the song itself has gave some great captions, such as, “Came through drippin’,” “quick to drop a n*gga,” “is she a stripper, a rapper, or a singer,” and my personal favorite line, “you not my b*tch, then b*tch you are done!” While this was a promotional single and did fairly decent, it probably wasn’t the reaction that Cardi and the Migos were expecting from the audience. The only thing I could say about this song is that this really could’ve been a solo Cardi rap song.
