Opinion: Why Cardi Could Win Best Female Hip Hop Artist at 2019 BET Awards?

Cardi B has been having a pretty good year musically, with both her own solo music and also collabs. Which is pretty great, considering that the BET Awards is coming up soon and Cardi is one of the most nominated artists of the night with 7 BET Awards nominations. She’s also been confirmed to be performing at the BET Awards this year. Of course, one of the awards that Cardi is nominated for is Best Female Hip Hop Artist.

It’s usually one of the more anticipated awards for the show, and they as of recently be keeping it to be revealed towards the end. This award was given multiple times to Nicki Minaj as of 2017, and for a good while was even dubbed by fans, the “The Nicki Minaj Award” considering how much she’s won it since she’s been in the game since the year 2010 that she’s been nominated for that award.

In regards of who could win it, let’s look at the nominations:

Of course you have Cardi B, then you have Kash Doll, Lizzo, Megan thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and Remy Ma. The competition is actually pretty great, and this maybe the best line up of female rappers that the BET Awards has actually nominated, but onto the nominees!

Cardi B.

Cardi has put out a good bit of music this year, since her Grammy winning debut album, “Invasion of Privacy” dropped last year. Since this year has began she’s put out two solo records: “Money” and “Press.”

“Money” is still dominating on the charts, which is wild considering it really came out almost at the end of last year. “Press” being her most recent song and also still on the charts with no music video available as of yet.

Though it’s being rumored that a music video may more than likely be premiered at the BET Awards this year, alongside with a televised performance of the song. Also her collabs with Offset, and her most recend DJ Khaled collabs are still making buzz. The host of this years show Regina Hall has even implied that it’s looking like a BIG night for Cardi. While, yes Cardi may have great competition it’s still looks as if this award could definitely go to her!

Kash Doll

This may be the more random choice within the line up along with another one, though it’s understandable as to why they may have nominated her. Kash Doll is mostly best known for her song “For Everybody” that released around 2017. Kash Doll has also came from the same background as Cardi, as they were both former strippers. Since she’s been noticed in 2018, Kash Doll has put out one mixtape that was very well received called “Brat Mail” and as of August of last year she’s been signed to Republic Records.

Since being signed, she’s put out her first label record called, “Ice Me Out” and a track with another female rapper Dreezy, called, “Channel Slides.” She’s also been on a couple of collabs, such as the Big Sean and Metro Boom album and the remix for “Ice Me Out” that featured 2Chainz. Also in 2019, she’s put out a more recent song the featured Lil’ Wayne called, “Kitten.”

As of 2019, Kash Doll hasn’t really gotten that much buzz even after getting signed. Though, she has went on record and thanked the BET Awards for even acknowledging her. Though, because of not than much material it’s pretty unlikely for her to get the award.

Megan thee Stallion

Probably the “most hyped” up rap chick on the list, Megan thee Stallion has recieved some bit of hype since she’s released her first EP, “Tina Snow,” which was released in 2018. Also in 2018, she’s been signed to 300 Entertainment (which is under Atlantic Records), which actually makes her the first female rapper to be signed under that label.

In 2019, Megan does seem to have the online support, but the problem with Megan is that support hasn’t been translating to sales. Back in May of 2019, she dropped her first full-length project called, “Fever.” The mixtape was pretty well received, the most notable tracks that getting the most reception from the “Fever” mixtape is, “Sex Talk,” “Simon Says,” “Realer,” and “Money Good.”

With the hype of Megan she may be the only other contestant that could be getting this award, but I do have another contender that could possibly take it other than Megan.

Lizzo

Lizzo is another new female rapper that’s on the list, and she’s been making her own wave as of recently. Lizzo has actually been around since 2013, but it seems like she’s been killing it even more as of recently.

She didn’t have much notable things going on in 2018, though in 2019, she’s been signed to Atlantic Records back in early January and since then has released her first single under Atlantic Records being, “Juice.” She’s also released her third studio album, “Cuz I Love You” as of April.

The “Cuz I Love You” album has been received mostly positive, since its been released within such a short amount of time. If not Megan who couldn’t get it, the next best contender for this award would probably be Lizzo.

Remy Ma

Remember back when I said, Kash Doll was kind of a random choice, well the second random choice from this line up would be Remy Ma. As of 2019, Remy hasn’t really put out much music, and has mostly been doing her own thing. Her most recent song has been “New Thang” that featured French Montana. Her songs as of recently, has also been “Melanin Magic” (2018), and “Wake Me Up” (2017) that featured Lil’ Kim.

As of these days Remy hasn’t really put much focus on music and seems to be more focus on being a boss lady and doing things outside of music. Since 2015, she’s been apart of the Love and Hip-Hop: New York cast, and also has her own show on VH1 called “State of the Culture” where she’s co-hosts with Joe Budden, Scottie Beam and Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, where she and the other co-hosts talks about everything to do with Black Culture. In 2017, she was the first woman to actually take the award away from Nicki Minaj who’s been the most notable winner of that award up until then.

I doubt that Remy will take this again, just simply for not being that active in music within the past two years as of recently. It doesn’t help that “7even Winters and 6 Summers” eventually got cancelled, as since in 2017, it was looking like she was ready to drop an album but didn’t end up following up afterwards during her beef with Nicki.

Nicki Minaj

Speaking of, Nicki, Nicki Nicki. It’s been a pretty difficult couple of years for Nicki Minaj. Since 2017, not much has really been going her way. In 2018, Nicki has dropped her fourth studio album being “Queen.” For the most part its recieved mostly mixed reviews compared to her past album being the “Pink Print.” There was tons of controversies that surrounded the album that the music wasn’t really paid that much attention to.

In August of 2018, was when she put out her album and released the song, “Barbie Dreams,” which was probably the most notable song from the album. She’s also collabed with fellow New York rapper, named, Tekashi 6ix9nine on the track “Fefe” IT ended up on her album as well even though she was just a feautre. As of 2019, her most recent song and collab has been “Wobble Up” which is a feature with her, Chris Brown, and G-Eazy.

Nicki has faced a lot of controversy within the past year, but one of the biggest was the shade that BET made on Twitter, with the Grammy shade of her and Cardi B. This makes her on the lower end of not even getting it possibly and more than likely won’t even show up after last year.

So, I do think that Cardi still has a good chance of winning “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” this year, indeed I do. If what Regina Hall had said was true, saying “Cardi is the Queen of the night” then I have no doubt that our girl more than likely winning “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” is going to be apart of it. The only contenders from this year, I would consider as possible runner ups would be Megan thee Stallion and Lizzo.

Personally, I think that this has been the best line up of nominees for “Best Female Hip Hop” artist award and I think most of them are deserving of being nominated aside from maybe two of them. Either way congrats to all the nominees, the award kicks off on this coming Sunday at 8 P.M.

Opinions: Two Years of Bodak Yellow

Today marks the two year anniversary of the hit single that launched Cardi into rap super stardom, being, “Bodak Yellow.” The song was influenced by and interpolates the flow of American rapper Kodak Black’s song “No Flockin”.

The 8x PLATINUM track, peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and served as the rapper’s musical breakthrough. IIt was the first rap song by a female rapper to go #1 on Billboard since Lauryn Hills’ #1 hit single, “Doo Wop (That Thang).” The song received nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Grammy Awards. The song won Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awardsand Favorite Song Rap/Hip Hop Song at the 2018 American Music Awards.

This was the song that Cardi released as her first major label single “Bodak Yellow” & forever changed the landscape of female hip-hop.

CHARTING SUCCESS

Within the span of 12 weeks, “Bodak Yellow” rocketed to #1, surpassing Taylor Swift’s comeback single “Look What You Made Me Do”, & became the first solo female rap song in nearly 20 years to top the charts.

“Bodak Yellow” remained in the top spot for 3 weeks, surpassing Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That thing)” to become the longest running #1 solo female rap song in Billboard History.

MUSIC VIDEO

The song’s music video, directed by Picture Perfect, was released on June 24, 2017.

The video features scenes with Cardi B in Dubai, riding camels through the desert. The video received nominations to the BET Hip Hop Awards and iHeartRadio Music Awards. As of May 2019, the video had been viewed over 770 million times on YouTube.

OPINIONS

“Bodak Yellow” was a moment in pop culture history that cannot be duplicated. The song marked the beginning of a new era of female rap & became the catalyst in starting Cardi’s already iconic career. Happy 2nd birthday Bodak Yellow. Since the release of the song, Cardi has released her debut album called, “Invasion of Privacy,” which “Bodak Yellow” also made it onto as an album cut!

The song to this day is still very catchy and everyone still know it from word to word even after two years later! A lot of things has changed for Cardi since that song became a #1 hit! Since then, she’s also been the first female rapper in years to win a Grammy solo for Best Rap album in 2019 with “Invasion of Privacy.”

“Bodak Yellow” has become one of those staple songs that everyone has known and love! The success that “Bodak Yellow” had would eventually become replicated again with Cardi’s other song from “Invasion of Privacy,” with “I Like It!” Bodak Yellow was a hit that probably won’t be repelicated by another female rapper anytime soon, when it became #1, it would be a moment not only for female rap, but also for hip-hop in general.

Happy Two Year Anniversary “Bodak Yellow!” ❤️🎉

Cardi B. Performs at 2019 Summer Jam Performance Recap

Hot 97 hosted its annual Summer Jam at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Megan Thee Stallion, Rich the Kid and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie kicked off the first half of the show, while Meek Mill, Tory Lanez, the Migos and Cardi B added major star power as headliners.

Each artist had their own draw of fans that came out just for them but Cardi was easily the most anticipated.

The leader of Bardi Gang came out on the back of an ATV, dressed in vibrant yellow, rapping the lyrics to Invasion of Privacy opener “Get Up 10.” In response to her fiery entrance, the crowd hollered their approval. She was jovial, charming and personable — the same Cardi we’ve seen on social media for years now, even while spitting her most cutthroat lyrics.

After a high-octane performance of her most recent single “Press” — which much of the crowd surprisingly recited in full — she started a roll call for the tri-state area. “Is Jersey in the building?,” she shouted. Then after a light cheer from the audience, she smirked, “That’s nice.” She followed up with New York, the Bronx and Brooklyn, the latter garnering an uproar.

We also saw Cardi share her set generously, doling out stage time to a number of other artists, lending to the tradition of creating Summer Jam moments. She brought out Pardison Fontaine for “Backin’ It Up,” and she welcomed Yung Miami of the City Girls to the stage to perform their hit record, “Twerk” and sunk down to gyrate for a few beats. Blueface joined her to run “Thotiana,” and of course her husband Offset linked with her onstage for a quick performance of Father of 4 single “Clout.”

Cardi asked her crew, “Where my cowboy hat? Where’s mine at?” Concertgoers were trying to figure out which song she could be performing next where she’d need a cowboy hat. Before we could put too much thought into it, she was introducing Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X and their smash remix of “Old Town Road” to the hordes of Summer Jam attendees. The crowd’s roar came in waves, starting from the upper sections to the floor below.

Cardi B is just checking the boxes off: hit singles, collaborations, strong followings on and off-line, a Grammy with her first album and now a Summer Jam headlining moment to boot. She knows she’s winning now, but she’s always prepared to look back for a second — on Sunday night, Cardi B ended her set with breakout Hot 100-topper “Bodak Yellow.” Makes sense. “This song right here?,” she started. “It paid all my family’s bills, bitch.”

Cardi B. Confirmed to Perform at the 2019 BET Awards

The 2019 BET Awards are later this month and Cardi B, Lil Nas X and more are slated to hit the stage.

The 2019 edition of the awards show will feature Regina Hall as your host. In addition to B and X performing, DJ Khaled, Migos, H.E.R., Mustard, Billy Ray Cyrus, City Girls, Lizzo, Lucky Daye, Lil baby, and Kiana Lede are all included in the first round of performers announced for the evening.

“The BET Awards stage has become synonymous with powerful and groundbreaking performances that are authentic and bold, celebrating the influence and power of black culture,”

Said Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming at BET in an official statement.

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper is bound to have a big night at the awards show. She has the highest number of nominations at seven, including Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Video of the Year and Album of the Year Cardi B leads all BET Awards nominees with 7 nominations, followed by Drake at 5. Beyoncé, J. Cole and Travis Scott each have four nominations apiece.

Cardi B. “Press” Single Available Now!

Last night Cardi had revealed the final cover art to the upcoming single “Press”! The cover art has Cardi fully naked in fron of media press with two double bars going on her private areas.

Cardi B has been teasing a new single titled “Press” for months now (for all of 2019, in fact), and she made her fans wait until the year was almost halfway through to hear the song in full, as it has only just arrived.

“Press” brings Cardi back to the pure rap that originally made her a name to watch in the hip-hop community.

The newly-released single is Cardi B’s second proper single as a lead artist of 2019, and it is assumed to be the third promotional cut from her upcoming sophomore album, which still doesn’t have a title or release date, but which will likely be made available at some point later this year.

The song is released and available everywhere now!
