Years Later: “Clout” Was Released A Year Ago

Depending on how you looked at it, 2019 was a pretty good year for Bardi. It might not have been as a BIG of a year like 2018 was with the release of her debut album, ‘Invasion of Privacy.’

We were still able to be fed throughout the year with a slew of a decent number of features. One of those features include, “Clout,” with Cardi’s husband and group member of the Migos, Offset. “Clout,” ended up being the second single from Offset’s solo album, ‘Father of 4, which released on March 15, 2019.

The song initially charted following the album’s release, it reached the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100 after the release of its music video in April 2019. It received a nomination for Best Rap Performance at the 62nd Grammy Awards, marking Offset’s first nomination as a soloist outside of Migos.

BACKGROUND

The song is a criticism of those who use others for fame, including social climbers or “clout chasers”, with the lyrics calling out those who have “the IG disease”.

“Clout” marks Offset and Cardi B’s fifth collaboration, following “Um Yea”, “Lick (Remix)”, “MotorSport” and “Drip”.

MUSIC VIDEO

The music video was announced by Cardi B on April 16 and released on April 17, 2019.

It features Offset and Cardi B delivering their verses in a yellow and black hall of mirrors. Cardi B is also shown in a pile of lemons and giving a lap dance to Offset.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Cardi and Offset both performed “Clout” at the 2019 BET Awards, along with a performance of “Press”. Offset and Cardi also performed “Clout” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on July 17, 2019.

THOUGHTS

I loved the beat to “Clout,” and while Offset did what he had to do with the track, once Cardi started, she showed up to talk cash sh*t. She has so much personality, charisma, and presence and she completely dominated and took over Offset on this song, that I forget that this was Offset’s song, and Cardi is just a feature.

It’s officially her song. You really listen to “Clout” for Cardi’s verse. Sorry, Set. Still it’s a solid record and it was probably my favorite verse and feature that Cardi was in from last year. Cardi’s verse just has so many quotables, that deals completely with what’s going on in social media today. It’s a tough society we live in where people don’t pay for information, but, gotta get those clicks these days. She had such a dirty flow on here, and she has understandably just about had it with these blogs that put out fake news and I don’t blame her!

What was your favorite song from ‘Father of 4,’ and was it “Clout,” and if not, what was your favorite Cardi feature that came out of 2019? Please, let me know in the comments below!
