Why Cardi’s “Femme It Forward” Tour Should be a Real Tour?

On the first day of April, Cardi B announced two upcoming shows in upstate New York featuring opening acts City Girls, Teyana Taylor, and Nicole Bus.

Once the Live Nation link for tickets went live, fans noted that rising Houston-based rapper Megan Thee Stallion was also on the bill for the show listed as Femme It Forward. Immediately, fans began to speculate whether or not Cardi B was previewing what might become a full-fledged tour.

Cardi B’s debut album, Invasion of Privacy, just joined Nicki Minaj’s first major label offering, Pink Friday, as the highest certified album by a female rapper this century (triple platinum).

The City Girls have generated ample buzz thanks to their Period and Girl Code mixtapes, and of course, the Cardi B-assisted single “Twerk.” As for Megan Thee Stallion, her record, “Big Ole Freak,” is rising up the urban radio charts. Because of a list of well-received releases—via mixtapes and viral freestyle clips—Thee Stallion has become arguably the most talked about new female rapper since Cardi herself.

COULD “FEMME IT FORWARD” BE A TEASE OF A TOUR ONLY CONSISTING FEMALE ACTS?

This tour could be consisted of not to just female rappers signed to major labels—but female rappers with veritable name recognition. For some of us, this is a long time coming. I have yet to ever experience a concert—much less a tour—in which more than one female rapper was on the bill, outside of Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint Tour, which featured Dej Loaf alongside Tinashe and Rae Sremmurd. The thing about the the Pink Print Tour is that there were still establieshed male artists involved with the tour being with Meek Mill, Rae Sremmurd and Trey Songz. Both Dej Loaf and Tinashe’s careers didn’t really do much with their careers even after being put on a big platform tour like this.

Personally, I love the idea of Cardi B putting together a slue worth female rappers at a time when, finally, there appears to be a real resurgence in female rap across the board. Cardi B, who has taken that template and run with it to her own great success. This isn’t about some fanwar anymore, this is to squash this sexism that we have when it comes to hip-hop and female rappers in general. It’s just noting how the industry’s sexism contributed to the decline of female rap on a wide scale, and recognizing what can be done to build on that and an all female act tour could do just that.

THIS TOUR COULD BE THE START OF NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING MULTIPLE FEMALE RAPPERS AT A TIME

I would love for this Cardi B bill to become a full-fledged amazing effort to change the status quo. That there could only be one female to run the hip-hip genre. It will help combat the small-one track mindness of some who think an all-female bill—particularly one largely of women in hip hop—cannot work or co-exist. Wouldn’t be amazing to hear a crowd of people to go out and support not JUST Cardi but the other females especially when you know most of their music?! A crowd where the people know the hits like “Bartier Cardi,” know a City Girls track like “Act Up,” or a newly recent track like “Big Ole Freak” from Megan. Also, how crazy would it be to see them perform a collab like City Girls and Cardi’s “Twerk” record?!

I would love for Cardi B’s potential Femme It Forward tour to go far and wide nationally because its success will yield more female rapper-dominated tour bills. You could even call up some of the female legends, like Lil’ Kim or Missy Elliott to get in on this and make it even more of a moment for women in hip-hop and represent for the old school side.

These ideas might have sounded almost blasephemy and implausible only a few years ago, but not anymore. A tour like this, could be a moment for female rap, and fans have long wanted female rappers to work together on something that feels this major! No, I am not going to say “do it for the culture” because that phrase has been played out and abused to death, but you know, it would actually be good for the culture though!

Hopefully, Cardi B will make this somewhat rumored tour an official thing sometime soon so she can take my money and, ideally, set a much-needed new standard for women in hip-hop!
