Opinion: Why Cardi Could Win Best Female Hip Hop Artist at 2019 BET Awards?

Cardi B has been having a pretty good year musically, with both her own solo music and also collabs. Which is pretty great, considering that the BET Awards is coming up soon and Cardi is one of the most nominated artists of the night with 7 BET Awards nominations. She’s also been confirmed to be performing at the BET Awards this year. Of course, one of the awards that Cardi is nominated for is Best Female Hip Hop Artist.

It’s usually one of the more anticipated awards for the show, and they as of recently be keeping it to be revealed towards the end. This award was given multiple times to Nicki Minaj as of 2017, and for a good while was even dubbed by fans, the “The Nicki Minaj Award” considering how much she’s won it since she’s been in the game since the year 2010 that she’s been nominated for that award.

In regards of who could win it, let’s look at the nominations:

Of course you have Cardi B, then you have Kash Doll, Lizzo, Megan thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, and Remy Ma. The competition is actually pretty great, and this maybe the best line up of female rappers that the BET Awards has actually nominated, but onto the nominees!

Cardi B.

Cardi has put out a good bit of music this year, since her Grammy winning debut album, “Invasion of Privacy” dropped last year. Since this year has began she’s put out two solo records: “Money” and “Press.”

“Money” is still dominating on the charts, which is wild considering it really came out almost at the end of last year. “Press” being her most recent song and also still on the charts with no music video available as of yet.

Though it’s being rumored that a music video may more than likely be premiered at the BET Awards this year, alongside with a televised performance of the song. Also her collabs with Offset, and her most recend DJ Khaled collabs are still making buzz. The host of this years show Regina Hall has even implied that it’s looking like a BIG night for Cardi. While, yes Cardi may have great competition it’s still looks as if this award could definitely go to her!

Kash Doll

This may be the more random choice within the line up along with another one, though it’s understandable as to why they may have nominated her. Kash Doll is mostly best known for her song “For Everybody” that released around 2017. Kash Doll has also came from the same background as Cardi, as they were both former strippers. Since she’s been noticed in 2018, Kash Doll has put out one mixtape that was very well received called “Brat Mail” and as of August of last year she’s been signed to Republic Records.

Since being signed, she’s put out her first label record called, “Ice Me Out” and a track with another female rapper Dreezy, called, “Channel Slides.” She’s also been on a couple of collabs, such as the Big Sean and Metro Boom album and the remix for “Ice Me Out” that featured 2Chainz. Also in 2019, she’s put out a more recent song the featured Lil’ Wayne called, “Kitten.”

As of 2019, Kash Doll hasn’t really gotten that much buzz even after getting signed. Though, she has went on record and thanked the BET Awards for even acknowledging her. Though, because of not than much material it’s pretty unlikely for her to get the award.

Megan thee Stallion

Probably the “most hyped” up rap chick on the list, Megan thee Stallion has recieved some bit of hype since she’s released her first EP, “Tina Snow,” which was released in 2018. Also in 2018, she’s been signed to 300 Entertainment (which is under Atlantic Records), which actually makes her the first female rapper to be signed under that label.

In 2019, Megan does seem to have the online support, but the problem with Megan is that support hasn’t been translating to sales. Back in May of 2019, she dropped her first full-length project called, “Fever.” The mixtape was pretty well received, the most notable tracks that getting the most reception from the “Fever” mixtape is, “Sex Talk,” “Simon Says,” “Realer,” and “Money Good.”

With the hype of Megan she may be the only other contestant that could be getting this award, but I do have another contender that could possibly take it other than Megan.

Lizzo

Lizzo is another new female rapper that’s on the list, and she’s been making her own wave as of recently. Lizzo has actually been around since 2013, but it seems like she’s been killing it even more as of recently.

She didn’t have much notable things going on in 2018, though in 2019, she’s been signed to Atlantic Records back in early January and since then has released her first single under Atlantic Records being, “Juice.” She’s also released her third studio album, “Cuz I Love You” as of April.

The “Cuz I Love You” album has been received mostly positive, since its been released within such a short amount of time. If not Megan who couldn’t get it, the next best contender for this award would probably be Lizzo.

Remy Ma

Remember back when I said, Kash Doll was kind of a random choice, well the second random choice from this line up would be Remy Ma. As of 2019, Remy hasn’t really put out much music, and has mostly been doing her own thing. Her most recent song has been “New Thang” that featured French Montana. Her songs as of recently, has also been “Melanin Magic” (2018), and “Wake Me Up” (2017) that featured Lil’ Kim.

As of these days Remy hasn’t really put much focus on music and seems to be more focus on being a boss lady and doing things outside of music. Since 2015, she’s been apart of the Love and Hip-Hop: New York cast, and also has her own show on VH1 called “State of the Culture” where she’s co-hosts with Joe Budden, Scottie Beam and Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, where she and the other co-hosts talks about everything to do with Black Culture. In 2017, she was the first woman to actually take the award away from Nicki Minaj who’s been the most notable winner of that award up until then.

I doubt that Remy will take this again, just simply for not being that active in music within the past two years as of recently. It doesn’t help that “7even Winters and 6 Summers” eventually got cancelled, as since in 2017, it was looking like she was ready to drop an album but didn’t end up following up afterwards during her beef with Nicki.

Nicki Minaj

Speaking of, Nicki, Nicki Nicki. It’s been a pretty difficult couple of years for Nicki Minaj. Since 2017, not much has really been going her way. In 2018, Nicki has dropped her fourth studio album being “Queen.” For the most part its recieved mostly mixed reviews compared to her past album being the “Pink Print.” There was tons of controversies that surrounded the album that the music wasn’t really paid that much attention to.

In August of 2018, was when she put out her album and released the song, “Barbie Dreams,” which was probably the most notable song from the album. She’s also collabed with fellow New York rapper, named, Tekashi 6ix9nine on the track “Fefe” IT ended up on her album as well even though she was just a feautre. As of 2019, her most recent song and collab has been “Wobble Up” which is a feature with her, Chris Brown, and G-Eazy.

Nicki has faced a lot of controversy within the past year, but one of the biggest was the shade that BET made on Twitter, with the Grammy shade of her and Cardi B. This makes her on the lower end of not even getting it possibly and more than likely won’t even show up after last year.

So, I do think that Cardi still has a good chance of winning “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” this year, indeed I do. If what Regina Hall had said was true, saying “Cardi is the Queen of the night” then I have no doubt that our girl more than likely winning “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” is going to be apart of it. The only contenders from this year, I would consider as possible runner ups would be Megan thee Stallion and Lizzo.

Personally, I think that this has been the best line up of nominees for “Best Female Hip Hop” artist award and I think most of them are deserving of being nominated aside from maybe two of them. Either way congrats to all the nominees, the award kicks off on this coming Sunday at 8 P.M.
